Aragonite is a carbonate mineral — a polymorph of calcite, meaning it has the same chemical composition (calcium carbonate) but a different crystal structure. It forms in marine environments, caves (as stalactites and stalagmites), and hydrothermal veins. Aragonite is the primary mineral in pearls and the shells of many marine organisms. Over time, aragonite naturally converts to calcite — making ancient aragonite specimens relatively rare. Major sources include Morocco, Spain, and the United States.
