Vesuvianite is a calcium magnesium aluminum silicate mineral that forms in contact metamorphic zones — where magma intrudes into limestone or other calcium-rich rocks. It was first described from specimens found on Mount Vesuvius (hence its name), though it's found worldwide, with notable deposits in Canada, Italy, and the United States. It's sometimes called "Californite" when found in California, where it was once marketed as "American Jade."
